Green Pest Control for Dogs

Green Pest Control for Dogs

Do dogs need pest control? You bet! The first pest that comes to mind is the notorious dog flea, but did you know that your dog's poop can attract rats? Or that ticks, fleas, and flies lay their eggs in dog poop? At Hearts Pest Management our top priority is to “first, do no harm!” Therefore, we decided to “Go Green” in pest control way before it became popular.
“My owner says I need pest control!”

We are the number one company in southern California to offer Green / Organic Pest Control and, the only winner of California’s EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) award for Innovative Pest Management.

Hearts has a green program for outdoor fleas!

We love animals; you'll find most of our employees have pets and are passionate about doing their part to give the best possible care and protection to every member of your household – including the furry ones! Our service professionals are EcoWise Certified in organic pest control applications but we also offer traditional and low-impact pest control options. We want to help you make the right choice in pest control for your home which includes the health and safety of your loved ones - be it two or four-legged. For information on general pests, including landscape and outdoor fleas, please visit our main page on Residential Pest Control.

Animals and Pest Control

- What you need to know

For outdoor general pest control treatments, whether your service includes traditional or low-impact products, it's always a good idea to keep animals away from the treated areas, just for a couple of hours until everything dries.

Our green program takes care of outdoor fleas and we can include your lawn but you'll still want to let it dry for a few hours before letting your furry friend romp around the yard.

Let’s take a look at some of the pests your furry friend might attract:

The Notorious Dog Flea

Dog fleas are a nuisance to both pet and master!

Flea bites are not only very uncomfortable for dogs, but they increase the chance of exposure to parasites and can cause serious medical problems for your pet. Saliva from fleas causes dermatitis in sensitives dogs.

If you notice your pet-friend itching frantically with reddened skin and scabs, he’s probably allergic to flea saliva. Fleas may also transmit plague or tapeworm! Left untreated, fleas can even cause anemia in younger dogs. The average flea can ingest up to fifteen times its body weight in blood!

Pet-Friendly Pest Control

At Hearts, our green pest control program treats for both general pests and outdoor fleas. Many pet-parents are concerned about using pesticides around their furry pals, and so they should be!

Two happy, pest-free doggies!

Dogs are naturally curious about their environment, especially when their parents are away from home! We use Eco-friendly products and preventative pest control methods to keep your doggy out of harm’s way should he wander into areas that are a “no-no.”

It should come as a relief to pet-parents that Hearts Pest Management uses a variety of green pest control tactics, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and pest prevention.

Indoor Flea Control

One way to tell if you have a bad flea infestation in your home is the “white sock” test: Wear a pair of white socks around the house … if you see a bunch of black spots jumping on them, you’ve got fleas.

Many pet owners try Do-it-Yourself methods for indoor fleas but found they don’t work. There are a lot of products and so called “green” ways that claim to get rid of indoor fleas, but the fact is, most do not.

It’s not always your dog’s fault you have indoor fleas …. we humans sometimes bring them in on our shoes!

For indoor flea treatments we do need to use traditional products and treatment is completed in two services, two weeks apart. We have found this type of treatment to be very effective.

The reason we use traditional methods for indoor flea treatments is because products such as Diatomaceous Earth are very messy and don't always work. And, strictly organic products are oil-based which can stain your carpet, area rugs, even your hardwood floors!

We will do our best to make the process as painless as possible. If you're not sure you have indoor fleas, we'll first provide a free inspection but if you know you have fleas, we can email you the flea preparation worksheet ahead of time so that once our pest control service technician arrives, you'll be prepared for treatment the same day as the inspection.

Both you and your doggy will need to leave for a few hours before letting your fur friend have free rein over the treated areas. We provide a 30-day warranty with this type of flea treatment.

Outdoor Flea Control

If you’ve only seen a couple of fleas indoors and you feel they're mostly outside, you may not have a large infestation and our outdoor treatment, be it traditional or green, will take care of the flea problem.

The key is to make sure your animals are being treated in some manner, either with flea shampoo or by your veterinarian... and remember to call us so we can take care of the outdoor fleas, before the problem gets out of hand and you do end up needing that indoor treatment!

Once your outdoor treatment is completed and dried, you can let your play buddy romp around the yard knowing he’ll be flea free!

Flea Prevention

Checking your dog for fleas: Wear gloves when combing and checking for fleas and/or when giving your dog a bath. Make sure you’re using a flea shampoo but more effectively, medication from your local vet.

Washing pet bedding: If you’ve recently had fleas, place all your furry friend’s toys, blankets, and other belongings in the washer, and if you can, dry them in a hot dryer. This helps get rid of any fleas and flea larvae that might be on them.

Afterwards, you may want to jump in the shower yourself, just in case any fleas got on you. They’ll easily rinse off down the drain. It’s a good idea to wash the bedding and doggy blankets frequently as you would your own sheets.

Yard: Make sure the yard is free from clutter and free from excessive moisture where fleas may lay eggs.

Rats: If you’ve seen rodents in your yard, although they may only be outdoors, rats do carry fleas and mites. Call us for a free rodent inspection!

Vacuum: Regular vacuuming helps prevent not only fleas but other household pests. Empty the contents in the trash can outside if you suspect you have fleas.

Other Pesky Pet Pests – The Dreaded Tick

The dog tick is reddish brown in color and is capable of transmitting Lyme disease as well as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia. One might refer to ticks as bugs or insects, but these blood suckers are members of the arachnid class. Like spiders, ticks have eight legs except when they are in the larva stage.

The Brown Dog Tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus)

Living in southern California, the areas you walk your dog are often native communities of chaparral. Hiking trails and nature preserves are where ticks live on wildlife. It’s important to check your dog’s fur and skin for ticks when you come back from one of these walks.

Adult ticks that hitchhike indoors via your fur friend will feed then mate. After mating, the female will drop off onto the carpet and lay her eggs— This is how an indoor tick infestation comes about.

To treat indoors, we would provide first, a free inspection and discuss the type of product we’ll need to use and a long you’ll need to be out of the house. If you think you have indoor ticks, check the following areas around your home: baseboards, edges of the carpet and area rugs, and the bottom of curtains.

Although tick eggs are small, they can easily be seen because they’re laid in clusters. Hopefully, with some precaution, you can avoid an inside tick infestation.

Tick Prevention

Besides checking your dog after a walk, here are some preventative tick control tips you can use:

  • Avoid walking through tall grasses, brush or other low-lying vegetation; especially during the late spring to mid-summer months.
  • At home, keep clear dead leaves and anything else that creates a moist environment.
  • Medications: There are a variety of ways to prevent ticks from attacking your pet from collars to pills or shampoos. Check with your vet or local pet store to see what they recommend.

Please view our page on Ticks for a better understanding of ticks and how to control them.

Rat mite; rats have fleas and mites!

Mites and Mange

The itch mite (Sarcoptes scabiei) is a parasitic mite responsible for scabies which not only humans can get but your dog as well. When he suffers from itch mites, it’s called, “mange.” They dig into the skin, causing intense itching.

The itching is an allergic reaction from mite feces. As a result; crusty scabs, hair loss, and infection can occur. Scary fact: Mange is transmissible to humans if there is prolonged contact with an infested dog or other animals.

Medication can be obtained by your vet to treat mange and by your doctor if you happen to get scabies as the result of contact.

a. When visiting doggy parks, steer clear of any dogs that have patches of missing hair. The hair loss and crusty spots usually first appear on elbows and ears.
b. If your medical professional has confirmed scabies, make sure you also take steps to keep them from spreading such as vacuuming all carpets, even curtains. Wash and dry your dogs bedding on high heat as well as your own.

We have a very informative page on parasites at: Mites Parasites
