What About “Safe Pest Control?”

Safe Pest Control and California Pest Control Regulation

Safe Pest Control does not exist in California. You mean it exists in other states, but not California? No. But based on current regulation of the pest control industry, it is not permitted to use the term “safe pest control” or safe as it relates to pest control. If you see pest control companies here advertising “safe pest control,” it is not permitted. You can check the Structural Pest Control Board regulations for the specific wording. The pest control board had its´ reasons, as it is perhaps too easy to falsely promote one form of pest control over another or to attribute qualities to a pesticide or treatment that is less than accurate. But it doesn´t make life easy for any pest control company that feels it may have “reduced risk” or “safer pest control” options – safe garden pest control or safe home pest control. More and more businesses are also looking for safe commercial pest control options.

Can the Consumer Determine If, Where or How Safe Pest Control Exists

So where does that leave you as the pest control consumer, if you are looking for safe pest control? First, don’t fool yourself. There is always some level of risk. You really must read and learn. You can´t take it on the word of any pest control company that they have safe practices, services or products. The reality is that pesticides kill – that includes so called “safe pesticides.” You may find some pest control companies in California that purport to be doing safe this or safe that – but it is illegal to make such a claim – so you won´t find that message here. We do want to draw your attention to the subject – because we get many people asking if Hearts Pest Management provides safe pest control. It is our duty and obligation to always tell you that we cannot answer that question. We can tell you a few things and let you be the judge.

Hearts Pest Management Perspective on Minimizing Pest Control Risks

  • We believe that finding a pest control company with good communicators – top to bottom – is imperative. Non-communicators don’t read the label and MSDS for pesticides. They don’t do a good job of understanding risks nor do they typically comprehend environmental issues – such as water run off and environmental risks. Not surprisingly, you want thinking professionals when you treat for pests on your property.
  • We also strongly believe that if we make employees feel safe that it contributes to a safe workplace. That is why we offer a well rounded professionals package of compensation and benefits so that our pest control technicians come to work healthy and are not prone to rushing on the the job, which can lead to accidents and chemical spillage.
  • We can tell you that “the toxicity is in the dose” and that each product has its´ own toxicity. Of course how it is formulated, prepared, diluted and placed will make a heck of a difference.
  • We can tell you that we use integrated pest control (I.P.M) methods that are founded on the principle of using many methods other than pesticides and using them first, such as full and complete inspection, monitoring for pests and “exclusion” to stop pests from entering, as well as habitat modification that will deter pests from desiring to be in close proximity to your property.
  • We can also state that we have had a green pest control program running for several years, prior to green pest control being popular.
  • In fact, many of our competitors were dead set against green pest control, thinking it doesn´t work, when the problem was really a lack of desire to move away from high potency pesticides that made their job easy, without proper consideration for environmental outcomes. Our green pest control program, called “Green Thumb Pest Control” differentiates itself as one where you take charge of what we do. You are in control. We will not place anything on your property that you, the consumer feel is not safe pest control. We will not make the decision for you about what is safe pest control. We´ll share our information with you so that you can make an informed decision, based on your situation, your family, your health concerns, your employees, tenants or residents.
  • Lastly, since there is so much false and inaccurate information out there about safe pest control, it helps to go with a company that has a green certification.
All pest control companies are licensed and trained, but going the distance to get a certification in green methods is impressive. It´s especially impressive when Hearts Pest Management decided, before there was even a green pest control certification in the pest control industry to go ask the environmentalists to certify our company´s green pest control program. EcoWise Certified was founded in the San Francisco Bay Area Governments and now administered in conjunction with The Bio-Integral Resource Center, to help improve water quality by establishing an integrated pest management certification program to fill that need of the community. Leadership – Hearts Pest Management took the initiative to apply outside the EcoWise catchment area to become the first EcoWise Certified pest control company in Southern California and Central California. We cannot tell you our pest control is safe – and truly pest control and safe are two words that don´t belong together. What we can tell you is simply that we are responsible pest control industry leaders. Join us on the cutting edge of pest control. Help us change the pest control industry as we change people´s lives for the better. You tell us what you think is “safe pest control” and we will listen.
