Spider Control in Encinitas, CA

In coastal towns such as Encinitas, spiders can travel from house to house and other areas of the city with a behavior called "ballooning.”

Many residents wonder why they have so many spiders and spider webs all around their home. This "ballooning" behavior is typical of coastal areas because of the continuous air currents from ocean breezes

Western-spotted Orb-weaver Spider

Western-spotted Orb-weaver - Orb-weaver spiders are beneficial in gardens; they catch flies and other garden pests inside their intricate webs.

After spending a short time with their mothers, young spiderlings will set out on their own into new territory by using the ballooning method.
On warm days when there’s a breeze in the air, the spiders climb to high points of a fence, roof, or even plants, and stick their abdomens up in the air to release a small amount of silk.

If the air current is stronger than the weight of the spider, the spiderling becomes airborne and is carried away, sometimes for miles.
Ballooning spiders have been found as high as 10,000 ft. and on ships, 200 miles offshore!

Spiders of Medical Importance in Encinitas

The Black Widow: Female black widows have shiny, black, bulbous bodies with a red spot shaped like an hourglass underneath their abdomens.

widows are found throughout the United States but predominately in the southern and western states. The bite of a female black widow is dangerous and full of toxic venom poisonous to humans.

For black widow infestations, Hearts Pest Service Professionals are experts at finding and treating the spider's hiding places.

Female Brown Widow with Egg Sac

Brown widows with "spiky" egg sac like to hide under patio furniture.

The brown widow: A female brown widow spider is similar to the black widow but less dangerous and a little smaller in size. She has a pattern of brown and tan stripes; and instead of a red hourglass on her underbelly, it's orange in color.

Another way brown widows can be identified is by their spiky, cream-colored egg sacs. Both brown and black widow spiders make messy webs called theridiid webs – sticky, tangled cobwebs in which to catch their prey.

Widow spiders prefer making webs and laying their egg sacs in undisturbed areas; sheds, garages, wood and rock piles, under patio furniture, eaves, and other outdoor structures. Indoors, they hide in cluttered areas like garages, in and behind boxes, in corners of rooms, and in closets.

Here are some precautions you can take to protect yourself when cleaning and doing yard work:

When working in a garage or storage area, wear long-sleeved shirts, gloves and even a hat. Avoid sandals and wear boots or tennis shoes.

Cleaning out woodpiles, handling lumber or moving rocks in the landscape should be done wearing gloves, long-sleeved shirts, and boots.

When black and brown widows find their way indoors, it's usually because you have lots of insects around - a widow's food source. Call you Hearts Representative, we can treat inside and out organically or with traditional methods, depending on your preference.

Ant Control in Encinitas

Lucky Southern Californians are sitting on one big Argentine ant hill! During spring and summer, ants start marching into homes, not one by one but colony by colony! These ants continue into fall and winter preferring to come indoors when it gets wet outside from the rains.

Residents get frustrated in trying different home remedies but atlas, they do not work with these invaders from Argentina. The Argentine ant has become the most problematic ant species for Californians - and is the hardest to control. Do-it-yourself methods don't work for a couple of reasons:

a. Because Argentine ants can move their colonies within just hours, either to escape when they know your coming with the spray bottle or to take advantage of a new food source.

b. This particular species has more than one queen, which means breaking off from the one colony and easily starting another (most ants species have only one queen).

Did you know that ants spread diseases such as salmonella and staph? They can spread these diseases throughout your home as they come indoors, crawling across the kitchen counters in search of food and water!

The most effective pest control and permanent solution is to find and treat the Argentine ant nest. Queen Argentine ants must be eliminated to properly eradicate a colony.

Hearts Service Professionals are experts at identifying this ant species and finding their colonies, in and around your property.

Landscape Pest Control in Encinitas

Aphids are often green in color, depending on the species, with long slender mouth parts that they use to pierce and then suck out fluids from tender parts of plants, usually the leaves.

Large populations of aphids will cause leaves to discolor, turning them yellow.
The honeydew an aphid emits from its rear is a sticky substance that can cause a black, sooty-looking fungus to grow on leaves and stems of plants.

Leaf with aphids and whiteflies

Aphids and whiteflies damage leaves of trees and shrubs.

Besides damage to plants, aphids are a two-fold type of pest because the more aphids you have, the more ants come around in search of the sweet honeydew aphids provide.
In exchange for the honeydew, aphids are protected by the ants and are actually "herded" into safe areas.

This ant behavior is called "farming" and gives an ant colony a stable food source. If you treat for aphids, you´ll have fewer ants.

Oh Roof Rats!

Roof Rats are notorious for using tree branches as a means to cross over onto your roof and into your home; especially during winter months when they start searching for warm, comfy places to make their nests.

Along with bringing their family members to partake of the kitchen pantry, rats and mice carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans.

Roof Rats Climbing down a wire or rope, one after another.

Roof rats are very common and great climbers.

Rats can be one of the most troublesome of rodents, especially when they decide to set up camp in your attic
They scurry across the attic floor or crawl space, creating pitter-patter noises with their tiny feet, waking you up at three in the morning. Then they decide to visit the kitchen where they eat and contaminate your food.

roof rats are in your attic, they destroy the insulation by urinating on it; breathing in the contaminated insulation and feces through air vents can also transmit disease.
Rats usually start creating their nest in the winter and then breed throughout the year.

Many of the homes in Encinitas are older and have lots of cracks and crannies where rodents can enter.
