Going Green with Hearts Pest Management

Hearts is the only pest control company in southern California that has received an award from California's EPA in Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Besides treating with organic products for general pests such as ants and spiders, our service professionals inspect your property on each visit and provide IPM solutions to prevent pests from coming inside your home.

The Integrated Pest Management approach to pest control is finding out why insects and other pests are invading the home, and then helping you find the right solutions to your pest problems. Sometimes it is as simple as caulking cracks and crevices or trimming plants away from the foundation of your home.

Hearts Pest Management cares about beneficial insects like our honeybees - just one of the many reasons we practice IPM solutions.

At Hearts we target specific pests and treat only where necessary

Our “Greenthumb” maintenance program is our most popular, although we do treat with traditional products, depending on your preference.

Individuals sensitive to chemicals or families with young children and/or pets prefer the organic, green pest control program which is recommended on a monthly basis.

Many Hollywood residents, however, take advantage of our flexibility by choosing the winter bi-monthly service and then switching back to monthly come spring and summer. For more information on "Going Green" with Hearts, please visit our page on Green / Organic Pest Control

Argentine Ants have built one of 3 super-colonies in the entire world, all up and down California!

Argentine Ant Control in Hollywood

Hollywood, like the rest of southern California, has been taken over by Argentine ants, invaders of South America. And just like us, Argentine ants prefer climates that are not too wet, not too cold, and not too hot or dry.

Ants in Hollywood are year-round pests but they become especially annoying during August and September, two of the the hottest and driest months of the year.

It's just too hot and dry for Argentine ants; they make their way inside in droves searching for water. Ants don't care if it's bath, kitchen, or toilet water, just so long as it's water!

Then, after a few rainy days of winter, it becomes to cold and wet for these little thieves and they march indoors again! This time to get away from water!

This Coast Horned lizard is feeding on California Seed-Harvester ants, its primary food source. The numbers of Coast Horned lizards have declined over recent years because of Argentine ants and their aggressive behavior.

This ant species has a strong nesting behavior that makes it easy for them to adapt to our environment. They'll nest in wood chips, compost, trash, potted plants, and even the top soil near the foundation of a home.

Unlike other ant species, Argentine ants have many queens in a colony which makes them hard to control with Do-it-Yourself methods. They see the Raid can or the sugar solution you so carefully created and then several queens will break away to start new colonies elsewhere on your property!

There are a few things you can do to manage ants. First, make sure any cracks or gaps along your foundation and around any pipes are properly sealed with caulk. Secondly, trim shrubs and plants a few inches away from the house. Third, plant native chaparral as much as you can so you use less water. Argentine ants love wet lawns and leaking irrigation.

After you've done all the preventative methods, get on a pest control plan because Argentine ants are year-round pests. Hearts Pest Management can help you by treating with traditional or organic products, depending on your preference, and inspect your property for nests.

Landscape Pest Control in Hollywood

Ever notice ants on your plants? In your garden landscape, Argentine ants practice mutualism - both garden pests and ants benefit from each other. Ants provide aphids protection from predators like birds and in exchange, aphids feed the ants honeydew.

Many times it's the aphids, mealybugs, and other scale insects that cause damage to your plants and shrubs. These insects feed on sugar and other substances in the plant causing which in turn becomes a sticky sap called "honeydew" that they emit from their rears.

Ants can be pests both indoors and outdoors. Here you see them “farming” aphids for their sweet honeydew.

Damage to plants from honeydew take the form of discolored and deformed leaves as well as black sooty mold. Our service professionals are skilled in eliminating landscape pests while keeping in mind the health of the environment and beneficial garden insects such as praying mantids, lacewings, and ladybugs.

Hearts Pest Management is licensed for both structural and landscape pest control

Insects are not the only landscape pests. Gophers and squirrels like to burrow and when they do, they damage the roots of plants, and ruin your landscape, not to mention create unsightly and even dangerous holes in the ground.

Gophers will pull down your prized plants one by one – right by the roots! We can help! Our landscape inspections, including gophers and squirrels, are free!

Planting native California plants like the Toyon Berry saves both on pests and water!

One way to cut back on outdoor pests is by planting California native plants.

Many nurseries now carry these drought adaptive plants and shrubs; not only do you save water but there's less risk of over-watering which attracts insects.

Plus, it appears that California's native chaparral plants have no problem with gophers and squirrels. ...
