LEED Building and Pest Control Management
More and more companies are choosing to build “Green Certified” buildings through LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), under the guidelines of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The objective of green buildings is to reduce the overall impact of the building, both on human health and the natural environment. This objective includes pest control.
LEED Environmental Requirements and Pest Control
There are five environmental categories with standards to be met for a building to be considered “Green.” The Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) category was created to provide comfort, well-being, and productivity of the building’s occupants. What does this have to do with pest control? It requires pest control companies to look for non-chemical ways of treating indoor and outdoor pests.
LEED certification requires a company to “minimize pest problems and exposure to pesticides” as one of the environmental standards that must be met to be considered a “Green Building.”Your Hearts’ service professional will inspect, free-of-charge, and provide a “Pest Management Plan” to meet the standards required for your building to become LEED Certified. Hearts Pest Management will then provide your company with an “IPM Site and Treatment Plan” form to document the service visits by your EcoWise certified pest professional. The checklist will ensure you are meeting the goal of LEED’s certified green building standards, which is “to minimize pest problems and exposure to pesticides.”

This company decided to create a “living wall” but one of their pest problems was gnats due to frequent watering. Hearts was able to treat utilizing our “Greenthumb” maintenance program.
