Spider Control in Manhattan Beach

There are small little jumping spiders, fast-moving wolf spiders, beautiful orb-weaver spiders, and not-so-itsy-bitsy black and brown widow spiders that inhabit the City of Manhattan Beach. Most spiders are harmless but the two spiders of medical importance are the notorious black and brown widow spiders.

A red-jumping spider is devouring a yellowjacket.

The mouth parts of Daddy Long-legs, found typically in ceiling corners and bathtubs, can’t even penetrate human skin; and, they usually disappear within a day or two. Outdoors, Orb-weaver spiders create beautiful, intricate, webs that actually benefit the landscape by trapping garden pests.

Black and Brown widows are a different story, however, they will bite when feeling threatened and humans usually have an allergic reaction to their venom. These spiders have messy, Halloween like webs and can be found in dark corners. Brown widows are notorious for building their webs under patio furniture.

Black widow spiders have stronger venom than Brown widows but both are toxic to humans.

Both Black and Brown widow spiders are toxic to humans.

There are a couple reasons you may have an ongoing infestation of spiders. The first is that you probably have a lot of insects – a spider’s food source. Secondly, living along the coast, spiders have a way of traveling about town; it’s called “Ballooning.”

Ballooning is a behavior typical of coastal spiders. Here’s how they do it: the spider climbs high on a fence, roof, or tree and then raises its rear-end, letting out a single strand of silk (sort of like bungee jumping) allowing ocean currents to carry it into neighboring homes, including other towns.

Look closely and you can see this crab spider ballooning by the lift of its abdomen and a single strand of silk.

Hearts Pest Management will help keep spiders at bay by getting rid of their food source, treating and eliminating egg sacs, and de-web around your home.

Ant Control in Manhattan Beach

Got Ants? We have green, organic solutions for ant control! Ants are year-round pests in southern California. In summer, they march indoors looking for food and water. Then in winter, they come in side to try and get away from the water!

Did you know that different species of ants prefer protein over sweets? Argentine ants are the main culprits for your ant infestations. This species likes both protein and sweets. One customer called about an ant trail in his kitchen, “I dropped a tiny piece of ham on the floor last night and now it’s covered with ants!”

Do-it-yourself ant control doesn’t work with Argentine ants because, unlike other species, they have more than one queen in a colony. If they see your borax solution or bottle of Windex coming, a queen will break away, taking some worker ants with her, and start another colony elsewhere on your property.

Our service technicians are knowledgeable about different ant species and trained in how to treat, according to species, plus search out where the ants are coming from and then find the nest.
