Green Pest Control for Cats

Green Pest Control for Cats

The luckiest people are owned by cats. I may be biased because I’m owned by two of them; a 17-year-old and an 8-year-old.

Like me, you’re probably concerned about using pest control, especially if your fluffy friend is an indoor / outdoor pet.

At Hearts Pest Management, we strive to use cat-friendly pest control products in and around the home to ensure your kitty’s safety and good health.

Atreus likes to lay on the sofa where fleas can congregate, just as they do in carpet.

Our Green / Organic Pest Control program is designed for the well-being of the whole family, including the furry ones!

Cats are curious creatures and often put their noses where they don’t belong! For example, cats will play with insects and spiders and may even bat a scorpion around a bit. ...

Keeping your home free of harmful pests is important to your cat’s well-being. At Hearts, we target specific pests and only treat where and when necessary.

Ms. Tara counts on her owner to protect her from harm, and that includes pesticides!

If your feline friend is outdoors, and you live near an open area of chaparral or a canyon, you’ll want to protect him or her from insect bites, especially ticks.

There’s a variety of flea and tick medications, powders, and shampoos you can purchase over the counter.

Shampooing is good because the dried blood and flakes of skin, which by the way, provide food for flea larvae, are removed and rinsed down the drain.  But, to prevent re-infestation, you’ll need cat-friendly pest control around the outside of your home on a regular basis.

Cat Flea (Ctenocephalides felis)

Our green / organic pest control program treats outdoor fleas, ticks, spiders, earwigs, and big water bugs.

Unlike using traditional products in which you must keep pets away for a couple of hours after treatment, our EcoWise Certified products enable your kitty to pounce and sneak through the grass to their heart’s content.

Flea Control for Cats

Fleas on your kitty can cause dermatitis and even anemia!

Cat fleas are found on both cats and dogs. The adult flea needs fresh blood in order to reproduce. If you’re treating kitty but you happen to be the fresh blood, it’s hard to get a handle on a real infestation with do-it-yourself products.

In order to effectively control an indoor infestation, fleas must be removed from the pet, the home, and the yard.

Unfortunately, do-it-yourself methods to treat indoor fleas has limited success. Diatomaceous Earth is one product used against fleas but not only is it very messy, it doesn’t work that well and, inhalation can cause damage to the lungs of your cat!

Blitzen says, “There’s more than one way to get rid of a rat!”

For an indoor flea infestation, our traditional treatment is the most successful. We treat twice, two weeks apart and you do need to be out of the house for a few hours after each treatment.

Once the infestation is gone, you can certainly go with our green program to maintain the outdoor areas, so your home doesn’t become re-infested.

Do you have a dog too? Check out our page on Green Pest Control for Dogs.

Minnie loves to run and jump on the furniture then curl up in a fat ball for her nap.

A Word on Rodents

Secondary pesticide can be harmful to your outdoor cat if you have a rodent baiting service, especially if your cat is a hunter.

You may not even need a rodent baiting service because your feline hunter takes care of the rats and mice.

However, if you do need rodent control, Hearts offers trapping for rats on a weekly or bi-weekly basis rather than baiting for customers concerned about secondary poisoning.

Other Nuisance Pests for Cats

Cats are hunters by nature and are sure to go after anything that crawls or hops but if you see your kitty batting around a grasshopper, it’s probably a good idea to get the grasshopper away so kitty doesn’t try to eat it.

When mommy kitty sees a bug – don’t let her eat it!

Hard-bodied insects like grasshoppers, beetles, roaches, and crickets are typically non-toxic to cats. Nonetheless, ingesting insect exoskeletons can cause mouth irritation and gastrointestinal upset. Plus, roaches may carry parasites that affect cats!

Here are a few of the insects and spiders that can harm your cat:  Black and brown widow spiders, scorpions, bot-flies, biting ants, stinging caterpillars, centipedes, bees and wasps, including yellow jackets.

We can help keep these insects at bay so your furry loved ones can concentrate on playing with toys instead of harmful insects!

Pet Pest Prevention Tips

  • Keep ants from your pet’s food by placing their bowl in a shallow pan filled with water. Baking pans work well; ants most likely won’t want to cross over the “moat” you’ve just created.
  • If you’re concerned about clothes moths, use cedar in your closets and drawers; mothballs are very poisonous to cats. It’s like eating sold, concentrated pesticide!
  • Attract less rodents by keeping pet food in tightly sealed containers.
  • Caulk any gaps in windows and floors, and repair screens to keep insects, as wells as scorpions from coming indoors.
