Sac Spiders
This is not a pretty spider! Sac spiders are active hunters and vary in color according to species. They do not build webs except when making a small sack (i.e. sac spider) to hide in. Their silken retreats can be found inside of curled up leaves or if indoors, between fabrics and in corners. Most sac spiders are about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch in body length (not including legs).Yellow Sac Spider Species and Habitat
Yellow sac spiders can range from a very pale, almost beige, to a deeper yellow. They also have black hairs on their claws (feet). There are two species of yellow sac spiders typically encountered in North America; the first is native and usually resides outdoors where it can hunt garden insects, Cheiracanthium inclusum. The second species, Cheiracanthium mildei, is from Europe, having made its way to the states in the 1940’s, this sac spider is the one most likely found within a home. Since both are hunters, they do wander, especially in the late summer and fall when they migrate indoors looking for shelter to overwinter and lay their eggs.Sac Spider Bites
Sac spiders are nocturnal, wandering around at night looking for insects; they do bite humans and even tend to bite more often than other similar sized spiders. Bites are painful; the penetrating fangs feel like a bee sting that can wake-up sleeping victims. The result is a stinging sensation, followed by redness and mild swelling. The sac spider hunts insects, not humans – they bite because they get trapped between a person’s skin and their clothing. However, sac spider jaws are tiny and cannot pierce everyone’s skin; they also do not inject venom with every bite.Pest Control of Sac Spiders
Indoors, sac spiders may be seen at night running on walls and ceilings while on the hunt. During the day, they may rest in their web sacs in corners, behind picture frames or under furniture. Dusting under and around these areas on a frequent basis can help. Treating for other insects, either with traditional or organic methods, helps control a spider’s food source. Sac spiders are less likely to make their way inside if there is no food available. Call today at 1-800-986-1006 for help with a spider infestation.
