Do-It-Yourself Spider Control

It’s the middle of the night, you head towards the bathroom and flip the light switch on, all of a sudden a scream comes out of your mouth – there in the sink is a big, hairy spider! You run out to tell someone, (because you don’t want to be the one to kill it), and by the time you get back to the sink, the spider is gone! Then you proceed to tell (whomever you dragged into the bathroom) just how big of a spider it was and how you’re sure it was a brown recluse or some other poisonous spider……sound familiar?

Spiders are one of the most feared creatures, not just because some of them are poisonous but because they are….well, scary-looking. Here’s the thing about spiders, they’re solitary; to kill a spider, one must make contact with it, be it chemical, a shoe, or a rolled up newspaper, whatever it takes. Unlike ants or bees, spiders live and hunt alone. They also hide. One of the reasons it is difficult to control spiders with pesticides is that they don’t groom themselves with their mouths like ants do; and they walk high on their long legs so their bellies don’t have the opportunity of rubbing the ground where pesticides have been sprayed. Spiders require what is called in the pest control industry as “contact kill.??? Employing a pest service will keep spiders at bay by eliminating a spider’s food source – insects.  Pest control technicians discuss with customers, areas where spiders like to hide, such as underneath patio furniture and in closet corners as well as the garage. The technicians will also web dust around eaves, doors, and windows. Although, during summer months, it is important to view spider control as a team effort with your pest service technician by engaging in regular sweeping, vacuuming, and web dusting between services.

Here are some do-it-yourself methods for control of spiders:

1. Web Dusting

Purchase a long duster that can reach corners of ceilings, one for inside and one for the eaves outside (you can also use a broom if it reaches high enough). Knock down the spider webs once a week, twice during the summer months.

2. House Cleaning

Vacuuming several times a week using the hose attachment for getting into closet corners and along baseboards in crevices between the wood and carpet, also helps control areas where spiders like to hide. This keeps them from settling in and laying their egg sacs. Extra special attention to dusting behind bookcases and entertainment centers keeps cobwebs from developing as well.

3. Boxes and Storage

Spiders like wood which is what cardboard boxes are made of; this is a big attraction for them, especially in the garage. If you can remove as many boxes as possible and leave a gap behind stacked boxes where a broom can fit to sweep once a week, this will keep spiders from settling in and building webs.

4. Eucalyptus Leaves

If you live in California, than obtaining eucalyptus leaves is a cinch. Spiders do not like the smell. Placing a few leaves in strategic spots where you’ve seen webs or the spiders themselves, will keep them at bay plus the leaves freshen up any room, even the garage.

5. C.C.C. – Caulking Cracks and Crevices

Each spring, as part of your “spring cleaning,” it’s a good idea to apply the three C’s – caulking any cracks and crevices, where not only spiders but insects can make their way indoors. Areas to check are under doors, between the wall and baseboards, windowsills, sliding glass doors and cabinets.

Happy spider hunting!
