Red Seed-Harvester Ants (Pogonomyrmex barbatus) are a native species to North American and get their name from eating and hoarding seeds. Most are reddish in color with large heads. The number of red harvester ants has declined in recent years because of the competition for food sources with the invasive red imported fire ant and Argentine Ant. The decline of seed-harvester ants has also affected native wildlife species such as the Texas horned lizard and the coast horned lizard (southern California).

The horned lizard’s primary food source has always been larger, native ants which include seed-harvesting, honeypot, carpenter, and native fire ants. California Red Harvester Ants are aggressive and have a painful sting that spreads through the lymph nodes, sometimes causing reactions in animals allergic to their venom. They can also have a ferocious bite! Nest are easily identified; usually found outside in the soil, with pebbles and hulls of seeds scattered around the entrance.
