About Ants
Before we learned about both the benefits and the nuisance of ants and the damage they often cause, we began as children by being totally fascinated with ants; their behaviors, large numbers, how they work together, and how they dig tunnels. When children play with ants, they soon learn the other disturbing side of ants – that when ants crawl on us they sometimes bite us. There is so much to ants and we will never know the half of it. We hope that this website will provide you with further reasons to appreciate ants while also helping those who need to address nuisance ants to seek help responsibly as good consumers and environmentalists.Native and Invasive Ant Species
There are more than 12,000 species of ants throughout the world. Some are native to North America; others are invaders from afar. There are a few common species in and around the home and in the landscape that become pests during the late spring and summer months. Each species may prefer foraging for specific types of food, depending on the time of year and needs of their larvae. For instance, the invasive Argentine Ant like sweets and sometimes protein but the Pavement Ant prefers a little grease with its sweets and protein. Carpenter Ants don’t actually eat wood as termites do (they hollow the wood out to build their nest) but they also like sweets as well. The Pharaoh Ant includes some fat in its diet. The Thief Ant….well it likes grease and fat, and sometimes sweets. It really is a thief. Rather than forage on its own, the Thief ant steals food and ant larvae from other nests. Then there is the Red Fire Ant, also an invasive species that likes sweets and proteins too but prefers vegetation. Fire ants have become a major pest in the southern states, often ruining large crops. Among the native ants is the Harvester Ant which is a little bigger than most ants and actually “harvests” seeds from trees and plants. Scattered hulls of seeds and small pebbles are found around the opening of a Harvester ant tunnel. Call today at 1-800-986-1006 for help with an ant infestation.
