Argentine Ant

Argentine ants have invaded California’s coast and surrounding inland cities.

Ants Everywhere!

Del Mar residents may feel like their beach city has turned into one big anthill, well it has, kind of. … The coast of California is now one huge super-colony of Argentine ants, invasive ants from South America.

This particular species first came into the states from South America via cargo ships during the late 1800’s and has since created three super-colonies throughout the world – California happens to be one of them.

During spring and summer, Argentine ants come indoors in search of food and water. Then in rainy weather, during the fall and winter months, they come back inside again to get away from the water!Argentine ants don’t respond to “Do-it-Yourself” treatments for a couple of reasons: One, a single colony has several queens (most ant species have just one queen), which means if threatened; they can break up into multiple colonies and cause an even greater infestation.

And two, Argentine ants can move their entire colony within in a matter of hours. So just when you think your methods have worked, they’ve popped up somewhere else!

The most effective pest control is to find and treat the Argentine ant nest. Queen ants must be eliminated to properly eradicate a colony. Hearts Service Professionalsare experts at identifying and treating for all ant species, including these invaders.

Del Mar Fair / San Diego County Fair

Del Mar Fairgrounds and Racetrack. Residents living near the ocean in Del Mar may see more than the average amount of spiders throughout the year due to air currents.

Western-spotted Orb-weaver Spider

Spiders use ocean air currents to carry them to neighboring homes and other new locations.

Del Mar Spider Control

Spiders have this behavior called “ballooning” that transports them from neighboring homes to neighborhoods all the way across town, even to ships at sea!

Young spiderlings climb up high on a home, and then let out a single thread of silk letting the ocean currents carry them to new locations. It’s because of these air currents coming over the ocean that allows the spiders to travel great distances.

Widow Spiders

The two spiders of medical importance in Del Mar are black and brown widow spiders. Both will bite when disturbed or threatened.
It is very common to find widow spiders and their egg sacs under outdoor equipment, playgrounds, woodpiles, corners of the garage, under patio furniture, storage areas, and in the eaves.

Black and Brown Widow Spiders

A Brown widow has an orange hourglass and a Black widow has a red one on the underside of their abdomens.

Homeowners can rely on Hearts Pest Management to keep their spider population under control; however, spiders do have their place outdoors. Many spiders, such as garden orb-weavers, are beneficial in keeping landscape and garden pests at bay and, they don’t bite humans.

Here are some of the things homeowners can do, in-between pest services, to keep spiders from coming indoors:

Caulk any cracks and crannies to keep not only spiders out but ants and mice too.

Sweep at least twice a week, knocking any webs down found in corners and in the garage.

Check under patio furniture; brown widows love hiding under there with their spiky egg sacs.

Let your Hearts Service Professional know where you’ve seen spider activity.

Hard pruning of roses

January is the time of year for “hard pruning.”

Hearts provides an additional service to prune your roses and keep you apprised of the health of your rose garden.

Roses get tiny green caterpillars that look like inch worms called “Rose Slugs.” The caterpillar is the larva of a sawfly.
Damage from rose slugs causes what is called “skeletonization” of the leaves, leaving large holes and just the outline and veins of the leaves.

Summer pests on roses also include aphids, powdery mildew, rust, and black spot.
In sunny southern California we have insects and fungal diseases all year round, making it very important to keep a pest maintenance plan throughout the year.

Plus, many types of insects will overwinter on rose bushes. Hearts will help eliminate any overwintering invaders and summer pests.

Rose Slug

Rose Slugs “skeletonize” the leaves of rose bushes. The Sawfly larva eats holes into a rose leaf until all that is left is the frame of the leaf.
