Organic Pest Management for Day Care Centers

Day care centers require specific standards to be met when it comes to managing pests.
Children’s safety from pests and chemicals is a primary concern for both parents and staff members.

Integrated Pest Management for Day Care

Most facilities utilize pest control companies to routinely use traditional pesticides for controlling pests, regardless of the actual need.

Hearts Pest Management, however, practices Integrated Pest Management (IPM) each time we service a child care center.

Hearts Pest Management practices IPM in child care centers to protect children and staff from exposure to chemicals.

IPM Innovator Award
The EPA’s (Environmental Protection Agency) definition of IPM states:

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices, with pesticide application as a last resort pest control method.

IPM programs use current, comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment.

This information, in combination with available pest control methods, is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.”

Hearts Pest Management is recognized by California’s Environmental Protection Agency, as an innovator in Integrated Pest Management; the first pest control company in southern California to receive such an award.

Applying IPM Principles

How is Integrated Pest Management applied?

Let’s use ants as an example: Ants, like all creatures including ourselves, require food and water, and shelter to survive. Once ants have found an area where their needs are met, they take up residence. IPM methods block ants out and remove their food source and shelter thereby using fewer products to control them.

Ant Control for Day Care Centers

Hearts service professionals understand the behavior of different ant species and how to treat effectively according to the season.

If a line of ants are starting to come inside the day care center, our technicians will search out and eliminate the ant colony.

He/she will also provide suggestions such as caulking any cracks or crannies to keep not only ants out, but spiders, water bugs, and other insects.

Custom Pest Management Plan for Day Care Centers

  • Develop and implement a Pest Management Plan.
  • Conduct monthly inspections to identify pest issues.
  • Monitor rodent bait stations.
  • Use organic products for treating and eliminating insects.
  • Provide suggestions on sanitation and keeping food stored in tight containers.
  • Perform exclusions as requested to block off any access points where either insects or rodents can make their way indoors.
  • Apply low-toxicity baits, traps, or gels as necessary.

Did you know that ants can spread diseases such as salmonella and staph?

That’s why it is so important for child care centers, where children and babies are often sitting and crawling on the floor, to have a Pest Management Plan.

Hearts understands the importance of beneficial insects. Our Service Professionals are EcoWise Certified.

Our service professionals will outline a plan of action to keep your facility pest free and as environmentally sound as possible.

We use only organic products on the outside of the facility and refrain from using any chemicals, albeit traditional or organic, on the inside.

Pest Management for Playgrounds

Insects, spiders, and rodents don’t become “pests” until they pose a threat to humans and/or begin to come indoors. Some pests may overwinter in playgrounds, especially in sand, or wood-chipped areas. Black and brown widows hide under equipment and will bite when threatened.

Playgrounds become hiding places for spiders, especially brown widows.

Practicing IPM methods and following the suggestions of your technician will help limit pesticide use on playgrounds.

Your Hearts service professional will thoroughly inspect the playground and surrounding areas on a routine basis for evidence of pests.

Some of the types of pests found on a playground are: yellow jackets, fire ants, beehives, black and brown widows, and rodents.

Teaching children to respect nature, which does include insects and spiders, is important for the environment.

Not all spiders bite and some, like garden orb-weavers, are beneficial. However, educating children on black and brown widows is also important so that they are able to protect themselves by reporting any findings of widow spiders on the playground.

Spiders of Medical Importance

In southern California, two spiders of medical importance are the brown and black widow. Both make messy, Halloween-type webs and both have an hourglass shape under their bellies.

Brown widows are easily identifiable by their orange hourglass and cream-colored, spiky egg sacs.

Widow spiders tend to build webs under things such as patio furniture and playground equipment.

Black widow spiders, on the other hand, have a bright red hourglass and create webs in dark corners of eaves, closets and cabinets, windowsills, and in piles of wood or clutter.

Your Hearts service technician eliminates widow spiders on contact and will remove any webs found around the outside of the facility and on the playground.

Rat and Mice Control

If rodents are an issue, child-proof rodent bait stations staked in the ground, around the perimeter of the property (where children are not at play), keeps rats and mice from coming into the building.

Brown Rat – Rats and mice carry diseases such as Hantavirus.

It is a well-known fact that rodents carry diseases but what some individuals don’t realize is that breathing in urine and feces from vents in a building that has rats, can also transmit disease.

Rodents and Disease

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Preventing rodent infestations is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS).”

Hearts Pest Management provides free rodent inspections to day care centers. If staff hears noises in the ceiling and/or walls, or there’s a really bad smell coming from a wall, chances are you have rodents.

Hearts will perform trapping and remediation, an exclusion, and clean-up and sanitation if needed.
