Green vs. Organic Pest Control - What's the Difference?

Green and Organic Pest Control

What’s the difference?

We care about the welfare of your family and pets. That’s why we’re EcoWise Certified!

California has been a leader in environmental awareness for decades, thanks to the people of our sunny state who continue to demand more in the way of green products and services – Better pest control is one of those demands. …

Southern Californians want safer ways of controlling Ants and Spiders, and other pests, without worrying about their families and pets being exposed to chemicals.

However, deciding on which company to use and what’s considered “organic “and/or “green” in pest control is often overwhelming.

So, what is the difference between green pest control and organic pest control?

Organic infers that the product or service is “natural.” An organic pesticide is a product produced in accordance with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program (NOP) rules and regulations.

Organic pesticides are made up of materials that occur in nature or natural substances like soaps, botanical oils, lime sulfur, hydrogen peroxide, boric acid and diatomaceous earth.

Be wary of the word “natural” because natural doesn’t always mean non-toxic.

Other “natural” chemicals such as arsenic, strychnine, and tobacco dust (nicotine sulfate) are prohibited in a strictly organic pest control program.

Green products or services are defined as having the ability to protect or improve the environment by utilizing organic products, as mentioned above, but may also include repellents, either non-synthetic or synthetic.

These are considered “low-impact” and are often used in the green program, especially for Ant Control.

What It Means to Be Green

Hearts is the only pest control company in SoCal to win the IPM award from the EPA!

Many of us assume the words “natural” and “green” indicate that a product is safe or safer than a synthetic (unnatural) product, and that it’s better for the environment.

Granted, there may be some truth in the advertising but in California, pest control companies are not allowed to use the word “safe” in describing any pest control product, be it organic or standard; If they do, it is illegal so beware of the fast sales pinch!

Hearts Pest Management is the one and only pest control company, in southern California, recognized by California’s EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) as a leader in IPM - Integrated Pest Management.

Being green is a partnership between you and your pest control company. We can give you all the preventative tips we know of but if you don’t do your part, it makes it harder to keep pests at bay.

Take-away: Organic pest control products contain natural ingredients and require strict labeling guidelines, under both the EPA (Environmental Protection Act) and the NOP.

Dirty dishes left on the counters and kitchen sink overnight is an invitation to all sorts of pests from ants to mice, and rats!

Just because something is called “green,” doesn’t mean it’s completely “natural.”

There are, however, a wide range of products, both natural and synthetic, in our green pest control program, that have a lower toxicity rate than traditional pesticides.

One more thing; for green and organic pest control, part of the program includes IPM (Integrated Pest Management).

Practicing IPM solutions helps limit the use of pesticides and from over-doing organic applications as well.

Not every company does this. We do! Why? Because we care about you, your family and pets, and the environment.

Here is a perfect example of a home in need of some preventative measures! Not only is there ivy on the house but shrubs and trees touching the roof as well.

Integrated Pest Management and Preventative Pest Control

The most effective IPM solution we can recommend is preventative pest control.

Your Hearts service professional may make simple suggestions such as cutting back trees from the roof and trimming shrubs about 12 inches away from the house.

Many pests, including rats and mice use branches and foliage as a means of accessing your home.

Caulking crevices and gaps

Caulking any gaps around the house keeps a plethora of pests at bay.

Another preventive method may be to refrain from over-watering, especially potted plants where gnats and mosquitoes often lay their eggs.

Sharing our knowledge of preventive measures is also a non-toxic way of keeping insects and other pests from coming indoors.

IPM also includes using insect monitors, glue board traps, caulking along baseboards and windowsills, sweeping and vacuuming often.

Hearts Pest Management removes spider webs as far as the web duster reaches.

Spiders are physically eliminated by removing spider webs and egg sacs with use of our web duster – all non-toxic solutions.

Now you have options when it comes to keeping pests from taking over your living space – You get to choose pest control that is friendly for your home, family, and pets without subjecting your loved ones or the environment, to toxic chemicals.
